CWO Marty Brown was born in Montreal, QC on October 12, 1953. He attended Protestant Public school in his hometown of Greenfield Park on the South Shore of Montreal and completed school in the Quebec school system in 1971. Upon leaving High School he worked for a printing company as a Graphic Coordinator prior to thinking of a career in the Armed Forces.

CWO Brown enrolled in the Canadian Forces in April 1974 and upon completion of basic training in Cornwallis, was transferred to Borden for Basic Driver training then Kingston, where he began his occupational training at the Canadian Forces School of Communications and Electronics. He graduated from his qualification level 3 (Apprentice) Lineman Course achieving the highest-class standing and managed to maintain that standard through to completion of his qualification level 6B (Manager) course in 1991. CWO Brown has also completed such courses as Safety Management, Life Cycle Material Management (LCMM), and Fiber Optic Comm Systems Design Techniques. As well, he completed the Outside Cable Plant Modernization Course, the Communication Systems Building Network Design Course and the Senior CWO/CPO1 course in St Jean, QC.

CWO Brown's career employment has been diverse including tours at 1 Line Troop Kingston and 4 SVC BN Lahr as a Lineman, Comm Sqn Baden as the Line Communication Foreman (LCF) and Comm Sqn Edmonton as the Tp Sgt. He also served in a staff position as the first Group Line Sergeant at Comm Gp Vancouver and as Bde LCF at 1 CMBG HQ and Sig Sqn in Calgary. While in Vancouver CWO Brown took the time to go to night school and obtained an Academic upgrading. CWO Brown's NDHQ experience began when he was employed as a LCMM for LF, MF and HF Antenna systems in DCEM. As well, he served as the first Line Communication Superintendent (LCS) for 79 Comm Regt in Ottawa gaining valuable satellite ground terminal experience while supporting National Command and Control Information System detachments deployed on UN ops and as the last LCS of 73/74 Comm Gp Edmonton prior to DISO devolution. CWO Brown also enjoyed a tour as the LCS for the Army supporting the Director of Signals, a most challenging and rewarding position. He considered it an honour to be appointed C and E Branch Chief and found it a most fitting way to end his career as an NCM (representing the NCMs of the Branch).
